Open from 11 March to May 9 2016, The White Room had nearly 10,000 visitors during its opening. The White Room manifests as the ideal corporate shopping experience; fully equipped with data experts, product lines and a hands- on training facility. ‘Valued customers’ can play with our everyday devices and gain a better understanding of the digital shadows they cast. Through sleek interfaces and user friendly systems, visitors will see how individual identities are mediated by the state and through corporations. The White Room shows participants how data is aggregated by their activities in existing technological environments and acts as a guide for the broader scope of the ‘self' within these environments. Through this interactive experience, visitors will acquire the knowledge to make more informed choices online based on the current state of internet freedom, privacy, and surveillance. Historical artworks call for a reinterpretation of early conceptual art’s concern with quantification, its “aesthetics of bureaucracy,” and the deconstruction of the self in light of current data- collection. The exhibition includes contributions by media historians and writers, reconstructing the history and the present rise of data-technologies and portraying the world they bring about. A live installation—conceived by Tactical Tech—offers an active space in which visitors can explore their own digital traces. This White Room combines selected artworks, digital products, investigations, and activist projects with discussions, consultations, and demos exploring the devices we use every day, and how we can regain some control over our data. It asks: Will these systems be able to stabilize themselves, and contain the forces of chaos, disorder, and the unknown, real, or imagined threats? What does 'privacy' mean when it becomes possible to identify someone just as easily from 'anonymous data' as from a fingerprint or identity card? What remains of the world when it is being interpreted for us by machines? Discourse around the integrations of these technologies vary with magnitude. One approach is of emancipation, egalitarianism, and empowerment the other of repression, surveillance, and state power. Neither in favour nor against these technological advancements, this exhibition instead highlights the relationship between the individual and the vast networked infrastructures of data collection. The revelations presented also shed light into the roles that legislation and markets play to influence individual experience and activity. These issues are pursued by the exhibition Nervous Systems at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, with artistic works and collected materials to better illustrate the entanglements of state, industry, body and technology in its genealogy as well as its relevance.
