350.org has called the International Day of Climate Action, which took place on the 24th October this year, 'the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history.' On this day, more than 5400 actions against climate change took place in over 181 countries. Tactical Tech had an integral part to play in the facilitation of this campaign at a grassroots level using mobile phones. Tactical Tech and 350.org developed 'Project MOBiLIZE', a global text message system, especially for this event. This enabled effective two-way communication, via text messages, between organisations participating in the campaign and their subscribers. Participating organisations could send out country-specific updates to their supporters but also channel messages from other participating countries at the cost of a local message.
